Last updated – 23rd November 2019

I created this page to help website owners understand when Google has made a core update to their algorithym and what different SEO experts are saying is impacting search engine results.

Hopefully, this will give you a better understanding of the updates and why your business website has been affected.

Search engines are trying to determine who has the best answer for certain search terms. Shifts in the core algorithym can provide you with opportunities.

Here’s the latest announcement from Google’s official twitter account about the October 2019 Core Update and subsequent November 2019 Update:

Google official 25th October 2019 “BERT” announcement on their blog:

If your rankings have dropped and you would like me to take a look at your website, please send an email to hello@digitaltreasury.com.au with the subject “google algorithm”.

What should you look into if your website has been affected by this Google core update?

Step #1 – Check your Google Search Console to see if there are any messages from Google

Your website may have actually been penalised.

To check if this is the case, you’ll need to go to the messages section of Google Search Console and see if you have received information here about a penalty that has been applied to your website.

If you don’t have Google Search Console installed for your website, go and do so immediately. It is FREE and will provide you will the best data on the exact keywords you rank for, including information on:

  • Clicks;
  • Impressions;
  • CTR; and
  • Position.

Step #2 – Have you made any big changes to your website recently?

It is possible that it wasn’t actually the algorithm update that has impacted your rankings.

Have you made any major changes to your website such as:

  • Website redesign;
  • Moved or deleted content;
  • Changed the internal linking; or
  • Upgraded from HTTP to HTTPS (secure) domain?

You might have actually made a change to your website which now makes it more difficult for Google to crawl it.

Step #3 – Is Your Content Actually Providing a “Good” Answer to the Searchers “Intent”

Step back for a minute and ask yourself, is you content actually providing decent answers to the search term?
